Mellon C-MAP Fellow – MoMA

Deadline: March 22, 2013

Mellon C-MAP Fellow (Experimental Practices in East Asia Focus)
The Museum of Modern Art (New York)

In 2009, The Museum of Modern Art launched Contemporary and Modern Art Perspectives (C-MAP), a global research initiative.  The program is intended to deepen the Museum’s range of expertise; expand the criteria by which quality in works of art and artistic movements is defined; enable the Museum to understand more fully the historical imperatives and changing conditions of an increasingly global art world; and infuse MoMA’s future with the diverse perspectives of scholars, curators, artists, and historians from around the world.

The Museum is currently seeking a post-doctoral candidate for a one year fellowship, renewable for a second year, to support and augment the C-MAP global research initiative focused on ”Experimental Practices in East Asia.”  This C-MAP group, led by an Associate Curator in the Department of Painting and Sculpture, originates from the Museum’s interest in exploring in-depth some of the most critical tendencies emerging from the East Asia region from the mid-20th century to the present, in relation to the Museum’s traditional areas of strength—Western Europe and North America—as well as to other geographical focuses of C-MAP—Latin America and Eastern Europe.  The research group includes curators from across MoMA and affiliate MoMA PS1, as well as a representative of the Department of Education, and the Library and Archives. To support the group’s research, the group invites local, national, and international scholars for meetings and workshops.  In addition, in keeping with C-MAP’s desire to expand MoMA’s international reach and network, group members travel to the region to conduct on-site research.
