Assistant Curator for Special Projects – Cantor Arts Center

The Assistant Curator for Special Projects is a 2-year position to assist the Director of the CAC to direct and implement a series of special initiatives relating to the display of the permanent collection and to the development of appropriate approaches for more successful visitor engagement. Specifically, this position will oversee the development and implementation of a revised labeling system and interpretive strategy approach to all permanent collection galleries and rotations. The Assistant Curator will work with the Director and select Curators to develop new installation plans for specific galleries and oversee their successful implementation. In addition, the Assistant Curator will initiate a new technology program consisting of in-gallery applications, website, and social media. There will be additional responsibilities relating to the implementation of special exhibitions under the direction of the Director of the museum.

The assistant curator’s responsibilities include:

Special Projects I:
Work with curators and Director on rethinking some permanent collection galleries and strategies for using alternative spaces within the museum. Will develop a proposal and plan of action for review and approval; then will implement the program. Will be managing team of museum staff to coordinate and implement the plans.

Special Projects II:
New labeling project for permanent collection installations and a new interpretive approach to didactic materials. Work with Director and contracted graphic designer to develop a new strategy for creating and maintaining a consistent approach to installing labels and texts in the galleries. Will be overseeing relationship with contracted graphic designer and will be managing project team of curators, curatorial assistants, and registrars to implement plan.

Special Projects III:
Developing new technology initiatives for the galleries. Create an assessment of current strategies, propose new approaches for review and approval, and then implement approved plan. Will be managing a project team of education staff and students to develop and implement the plan.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have multi-year experience in a museum setting with the development and implementation of exhibitions that include a range of art forms (e.g. works on paper, sculpture, paintings, photographs) and utilize a wide range of design interpretive strategies. Experience working with the care of works of art is also highly desirable. It is essential that the successful candidate works well in teams, has outstanding communication abilities, can work on several projects simultaneously, and has a proven track-record completing projects on schedule and within budget.
