Curator, Public Programmes – Serpentine Gallery, London

Deadline: 25th February 2013 at 10am.

The Serpentine Gallery seeks an experienced Public Programmes Curator with an integrated approach to delivering exhibitions, architecture, inter-disciplinary projects to assist the ambitious planned expansion of the Serpentine. We aim to draw out the connections between contemporary art and a wide range of fields, in collaboration with artists, musicians, writers, university colleagues and our audiences, and see this as a means of examining art’s broader social and cultural relevance. We will continue to develop a public programme that is engaging and ambitious, that takes a creative approach to its formats, and that opens on to inspiring worlds of ideas. The Serpentine Gallery is a ground-breaking public art gallery dedicated to international modern and contemporary art, architecture, design, education and public programmes. Based in Kensington Gardens, it is widely recognised as one of London’s leading galleries and attracts approximately 800,000 visitors in any one year.

This is one of the most exciting times in the Serpentine Gallery’s 42-year history. A new space, the Serpentine Sackler Gallery, an 1805 Grade II former munitions building formally known as The Magazine, is being restored and expanded by Pritzker-Prize winning architect, Zaha Hadid and will open in 2013. This new Gallery will bring a unique listed building into public use for the first time complementing the Serpentine’s existing programmes by presenting pioneering art, architecture, design, dance, fashion, film, literature, music, performance, science and technology. This new cultural destination for London has been described by Patricia Harris, First Deputy Mayor of New York as “The Serpentine Campus”. We are looking for someone who has an in-depth knowledge of contemporary art, as well as enthusiasm for a wide range of knowledge areas. Familiarity with other art forms is also desirable. We are looking for someone with initiative and a commitment to dialogue and collaboration, within and outside our organisation.
