Kress Curatorial Fellow -Two-year position

hampshire

Hampshire College, an independent, innovative liberal arts institution and member of the Five College consortium, is accepting applications for a Kress curatorial fellow. This is a two-year position to begin immediately.

With generous funding from the Kress Foundation, the College is seeking an innovative and emerging scholar for a two-year Curatorial Fellowship with a specialization in digital curation. The fellow will support the Institute for Curatorial Practice, a new summer academic program that combines new modes of curation, theoretical exploration, arts research, and direct object study. Our program is based on experimental methods of exhibition making, utilizing the advanced media labs and projection gallery at Hampshire, while simultaneously introducing the field of museum studies, the role of exhibitions in art history, and leveraging the object-based collections of the Five College Museums (The Mead Art Museum at Amherst College, the Mount Holyoke College Art Museum, Historic Deerfield, the Smith College Museum of Art, the Permanent Collection and Gallery at Hampshire College, and the University Museum of Contemporary Art at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst) as well as the other museums, historic houses, and special collections that make up Museums10. The Kress fellow will help create, curate, and maintain a permanent digital curation site and develop other ways in which the web gallery might be used (publications on objects in the collections; original artistic projects; links to other Five College exhibitions and projects, etc.) and will have the opportunity to create new exhibitions from Hampshire’s collections for other physical and video galleries on campus. The Institute for Curatorial Practice also manages the placement of undergraduate digital humanities interns into the Five College Museums, and as research assistants with faculty who are actively involved in curatorial projects.

A master’s degree in visual studies, art history, museum or curatorial studies, or a related discipline/comparable experience is required. Demonstrated experience in digital curation is required: familiarity with WordPress, Omeka, Scalar, or other similar platforms and programs as well as digital image production tools (Photoshop) is expected; familiarity with coding languages (HTML, JavaScript, Python), animation and/or video skills (File Cut Pro) are a plus. Teaching experience is desired, either as a TA or post-graduate, as is rights management and curatorial or museum experience; backgrounds in alternative arts venues and experimental curation are welcome. A commitment to working with people from diverse backgrounds is essential.

This benefited, 35 hour/week position has a two year employment cycle from date of hire. We offer a competitive salary and excellent benefit program. Please send a cover letter outlining your experience and preparation for this unique position, a resume, writing sample, list of three references, and links to one or more curatorial projects via our website at https://jobs.hampshire.edu/
