The Museum of Arts and Design – Associate Curator of Design

The Museum of Arts and Design (“MAD”) focuses on modern and contemporary art, craft, and design with a particular emphasis on process and materials. Through our exhibitions and educational programming, we provide diverse audiences with an understanding of the ways art and design is conceived and realized, demonstrating interconnectedness across a spectrum of disciplines and fields. MAD prides itself on being an artist-centered institution.

With expertise in the field of design, the right candidate for this position will join MAD during an exciting moment in the Museum’s history, as it puts into motion a new strategic plan and vision for the Museum’s future under new leadership.

Reporting to the Chief Curator, the incumbent will contribute to the advancement of the Museum’s exhibition schedule, focusing primarily on design. Candidate’s area of expertise should be in graphic, industrial, furniture and/or fashion design and/or architecture and technology. The Museum is seeking a bright new voice in design curating, and will be looking for candidates who exhibit a strong track record of original and critical thinking in their field as well as evidence of innovation in exhibition design and execution.

The new Associate Curator will conceive and execute both large and small-scale exhibitions and will be responsible for managing all phases of these projects in coordination with the Exhibitions Department and with the assistance of a project manager. Budget management proficiency is essential. Other responsibilities include: writing scholarly publications and texts; identifying potential acquisitions for the permanent collection; collaborating with the Education Department on related programming; participate in fundraising and cultivation efforts; consulting on press and marketing initiatives; and representing the Museum by delivering lectures, participating in symposia, and in other ways that further the mission of the institution.

Job requirements include: M.A. in art history preferred; strong knowledge of 20th- and 21st-design, with an emphasis on contemporary practices; at least five years of experience in curating exhibitions and coordinating associated programs; published scholarship in the field of design; demonstrated administrative and managerial skills.
