Artistic Director

We are seeking a new Artistic Director for Tate St Ives to join us as we move into an exciting new era.

Tate St Ives is one of the family of four Tate galleries and includes the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden. Following the completion of an extensive capital project, Tate St Ives will reopen the gallery and a new learning suite in the spring of 2017 and launch our new programme in the extended galleries in the autumn.

Leading the delivery of the artistic vision for Tate St Ives you will direct and lead the gallery’s curatorial and learning teams to deliver a distinguished and imaginative public programme which appeals to our target audiences and enhances the reputation of Tate St Ives for quality and accessibility. Building on the legacy of the modernist art colony of St Ives, you will work to ensure that Tate St Ives continues to nurture and inspire the creative and wider communities in St Ives and beyond.

You will work closely with the Executive Director and have access to the Director, Tate and the Director of Partnership and Programmes on the development of the artistic programme and to the Director of Learning on the development of the learning programme. You will play a key role with the Executive Director in setting the strategic direction and business plan for Tate St Ives and represent Tate St Ives effectively to artists, collectors and institutions in Cornwall and the South West, also nationally and internationally.

In order to succeed, you will be an inspirational, inclusive and creative leader with a distinguished track record as a curator of modern and contemporary art and a deep commitment to, and understanding of learning programmes. You will need a post-graduate qualification in art history (or equivalent experience) and be committed to developing quality programmes that are commercially viable and sensitive to, and inclusive of, our audiences., Crucially you must be adept at managing and creating high performing teams and have a real desire to work collaboratively with the team at Tate St Ives and colleagues across Tate.
