Curating and Mediating Art

Job description

The professor will work in the creative and internationally recognized environment of Aalto University’s School of ARTS. The position is situated in the Department of Art, known for nationally and internationally recognized high quality artistic and art pedagogical activities and scholarship as well as research. The department has three study programs that are taught by leading scholars and practioners in their field. The programs focus on art education, Nordic visual studies and art education, visual cultures, curating and contemporary art. The department conducts groundbreaking research in its fields and gives its students expertise in artistic practices and critical skills in mediating, representing, discussing and critiquing art and other forms of visual culture.

The Professor of Curating and Mediating Art will contribute to the Department and the field of curating through their deep knowledge, expertise and experience in curating and mediating contemporary art within various art institutions and the broader public sphere. The professor will work with students, faculty, and other stakeholders to understand and challenge formations, movements and international discourses of contemporary art and curating, and the cultural fields and networked world in which they exist.  The Professor will engage students through curatorial, theoretical and educational situations and events, where the multifaceted aspects of the art world are entangled. This includes the interconnectedness of cultural relations, organizational practices, and curatorial tasks such as collecting, showing, researching, and other methods to produce, install, curate and mediate exhibition content.

The professor will contribute to teaching in the Department of Art, both at the doctoral and MA levels, and supervise and advise doctoral and MA students with their dissertations and theses. In addition, the professor is expected to engage and provide leadership within the larger university context.

The position may be filled on any level of Tenure Track system (Assistant / Associate / Full Professor) and will begin during the academic year 2018 as agreed.

What we expect from you

The professor is expected to have a proven track record of strong contribution in the field of curating art. The applicants will be reviewed based on their research and/or artistic work, teaching and academic leadership as well as activity in scientific and artistic community. The professor shall have capability to work broadly within the related disciplines and competence areas in the field.

The applicant is expected to have:

 

  • A cutting-edge research agenda and significant experience in the field
  • Teaching experience
  • Experience in curating practice
  • Experience in interdisciplinary/transdisciplinary collaboration
  • International networks within the field of curating
  • A doctoral degree in a relevant field
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English

 

Throughout their careers, those in the academic tenure track system are expected to exercise and guide scientific research, to provide related higher academic education, to follow the advances of their field, to participate in service to the Aalto University community, and to take part in societal interaction and international collaboration in their field.

 

Tenure track in Aalto University

The position will be placed on the Aalto University Tenure Track. Individuals on the tenure track have the possibility to advance in their career through regular performance assessments, which take into account their merits in all areas of their scope of duty. Salary

Aalto University follows the salary scale in use at Aalto University, but applicants may also provide salary requirements.
